Tell us a little about yourself…

Aloha! My name is Brian Wyland, I grew up and live on the North Shore of Hawaii.
I am mostly a pure Trail Runner but I do run some roads just for training. I have transitioned into Ultrarunning in the last couple years and have had some of the most insane and amazing experiences of my life from doing so.

How long have you been running?

I have been running consistently for a little over a decade now.

Please list your favorite races and PR’s
I LOVE all of the HURT series races, they are so fun and always bring the best vibes and people together!

Maunawili Run With The Pigs is probably my favorite race of there short distance series. And of course the HURT100 was one of the funnest and most amazing experiences of my life!

I also really enjoyed the Zion 100k last year.

As for something similar to PR’s I think my favorite accomplishments would be (not in order):
– Mauna Loa from Volcano out-n-back 40 miler
Hilo to Maunakea Summit (FKT) with Duane Zitta & Tom Steidler
Grand Canyon Rim2Rim2Rim
The Kokee Marathon (my own made up solo marathon thing, lol)
HURT 100 – 14OA, 2nd Hawaiian, 1st 100 mile virgin
Kalalau out n back – 4:59
Plus there are a few more that I just cant remember at the moment

What are your 2020 Racing plans and running goals?
-HURT100 – done!
Antelope Canyon 50miler
Bryce Canyon 50miler
Old Cascadia 100miler

Adventure Runs on the list:
Kaupo Gap – Sea 2 Summit 2 Sea
Whatever other crazy sh*t I can think up and my body will allow, lol.
Any “bucket list” races?
Even though I never imagined myself saying it, but HURT 100 changed my mind – The Badwater 135.
And, of course UTMB & Western States.
I have also been really interested in doing some stage races like Grand2Grand or Mauna2Mauna

What is your average weekly mileage?
Typically i am running between 30-50 miles per week.

What is your favorite workout?

Honestly, I do not like workouts & dread them. But long runs? I LOVE long runs.

Favorite pre-race/post-race foods

Pre race, maybe some fruit and an avocado.
Post race, usually beer until my body will let me eat again, lol

What is the piece of running gear/food/drink that you cannot go without?

Tailwind & Carbo pro. I love my packs. Altra Superiors for shoes

What is your favorite running moment or running quote?

Slow is smooth & Smooth is fast. Also, take only memories, leave only footprints.

Describe your running before HRL and after. How have you improved and which PR’s have dropped?

Before I signed up for coaching with HRL I was always running too hard on all my runs, which I look back on now as reckless and left me really beat up. Since signing up I have been able to accomplish runs I never knew I would be able to do. I also place much better in all the HURT series races and have also won 2 of them.

HURT100 was a true testament of how the training has helped me. I ran that race better than I could have ever dreamed up. HRL helped me sharpen every single tool I needed for that race.

Why does training with Hawaii Running Lab work for you?

Most of this was answered in the previous question. But I would have to say that it gives me structure, accountability, and a reason to make sure I get my runs in.
