Tell us a little about yourself…
Hi! I’m Alyssa. I grew up in Nebraska, went to college in San Diego, eventually moved back to NE for medical school and now I live here in Honolulu for residency. I am currently a second year OB/GYN resident, so I pretty much live at the hospital. Luckily I am usually able to get my runs in, and I’m pretty sure that’s what keeps me sane!

How long have you been running?
I ran cross country in junior high and high school. I was never very competitive though and ran more for the social aspect. Since then I continued casually running and just got a little more serious about it in the last couple years.

Please list your favorite races and PR’s

Trail favs:
Peacock 27.5
Xterra Costa Rica trail half
Ray Miller
Hurt series races

What are your 2020 Racing plans and running goals?
I’m getting a little crazier this year and trying to get more into the ultra scene. Currently I’m signed up for Wy’East Wonder 50 miler in June and Javelina Jundred in October!

Any “bucket list” races?
I think I want to say the Hurt 100. I haven’t quite convinced myself I’m capable, but I do think about it from time to time.

What is your average weekly mileage?
Currently running about 50-60

What is your favorite workout?
I have a love hate relationship with the big road climb workouts. But my absolute favorite are my long ones out on the trails.

Favorite pre-race/post-race foods
Does a craft beer count as a post-race food?

What is the piece of running gear/food/drink that you cannot go without?
My Garmin. If it’s not on Strava does it even count?

Describe your running before HRL and after. How have you improved and which PR’s have dropped?
Prior to HRL I was very inconsistent, some weeks I would run quite a bit and others not at all. I have dropped pretty much every PR and have increased my mileage significantly.

Why does training with Hawaii Running Lab work for you?
HRL helps keep me accountable and consistent. There is no way I could come up with a legit schedule or workouts on my own, so its really nice having someone who knows me and my capabilities do that. Michael is also very approachable and I always feel comfortable reaching out when things need to be switched around.
